Pick up the Evian, put down the espresso.

A stimulating new study reveals that migraine sufferers often ingested large quantities of the coffee and tea stimulant, caffeine.

The paper, published in The American Journal of Medicine, concluded that people imbibing at least three caffeinated drinks daily were more likely to experience a migraine on the same or following day.

But those chugging one or two caffeinated drinks per day generally weren’t struggling with migraines, claim researchers.

While many people have stated that caffeine seemingly triggers their migraines, few studies have investigated the link. This study, with the egghead title, “Prospective Cohort Study of Caffeinated Beverage Intake as a Potential Trigger of Headaches among Migrainerurs, is one of the first to attempt to link daily caffeine changes to headaches.

“Interestingly, despite some patients with episodic migraine thinking they need to avoid caffeine, we found that drinking one to two servings (per) day was not associated with higher risk of headache,” concluded study senior author Dr. Suzanne Bertisch, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “But it is an important first step.”

The role of caffeine in triggering migraine headaches may be complicated, explained the report’s authors, because its impact depends on how much people consume and how frequently.

While caffeine could prompt migraines, it might also act as an analgesic, explained the researchers.

Approximately 100 adults diagnosed with episodic migraines filled out a survey twice a day for six weeks to record their caffeine intake and whether they suffered a migraine that day.

On average, participants reported experiencing about eight migraines during the six-week study period. All those surveyed said they ingested caffeine at least once during the period, and on average, they consumed nearly eight servings per week.
