ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING IS IN EFFECT FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Friday without the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the Rockettes’ Radio City shows, so Midtown ped-lock has eased, but auto traffic will be at its usual (although somewhat lower) congested levels. As always, take the train when you can.
The funeral today for hero Brooklyn Firefighter Steven Pollard, who died Sunday as he was rushing to rescue others on the Belt Parkway, will close Nostrand Ave. near Avenue Y, part of Avenue S and other Marine Park streets 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Drivers, out of respect for mourners, please avoid the area. My deepest condolences to the family.
The Rangers-Islanders cross-river rivalry moves to Barclays Center at 1 p.m. Saturday, bringing traffic turbulence to Atlantic and Flatbush avenues. after noon and 3:30 p.m. The Isles face Tampa Bay at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The Knicks host the Pacers at 7:30 tonight at Madison Square Garden and the 76ers at 1 p.m. Sunday.
This weekend and next, the 7 train will not go to or from Manhattan, only running between Queensboro Plaza and Main St. 12:15 a.m. Saturday to 4:30 a.m. Monday. The E, F, N, R and W are alternatives. The M train is not running this weekend, and the J is not running in Manhattan, stopping at Myrtle Ave. on weekends until Jan. 28.
Two reminders: Did you know that next month there’s a new alternate-side holiday, Lunar New Year’s Eve, Feb. 4? To find the best ways to avoid gridlock and parking tickets this year, order or download the FREE 2019 Gridlock Sam Parking Calendar at gridlocksam.com/store/. Print copies require postage and handling fees ($4 for one, $5 for five, and $6 for 10). Checks may also be sent to 322 8th Ave., 5th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
There’s a chance of snow Sunday, so it’s a good time to remember these safety tips:
- Allow at least three car lengths in front of you so you have enough time to stop.
- Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
- Park on the left side of a one-way street if heavy snow is predicted. Snowplows push the snow to the right.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full.
- Be aware of signs with snowflakes; they designate Snow Emergency Routes. It is illegal to park on these routes during a snow emergency, and being blocked in by snow is not an excuse.
