Giants owner John Mara’s wish for season is that Daniel Jones ‘never sees the field’

John Mara made his first visit to Giants training camp Tuesday and made it clear his goal for the season.

“I hope Eli (Manning) has a great year and Daniel (Jones) never sees the field,” Mara told the assembled media in his first press availability since Big Blue made the Duke quarterback the surprise pick at No. 6 overall. “That would be an ideal world. We would like to see that.”

Mara and the rest of the Giants brass are again banking on Manning, 38, to turn around a team that has just one playoff appearance since winning the Super Bowl after the 2011 season. Since then Big Blue has just two winning seasons and are coming off back-to-back last place finishes in the NFC East.

Despite selecting Jones in April’s draft, the Giants claim to be in win-now mode with Manning as the unquestioned starting QB. But the Giants would have to be in the mix in the second half of the season to justify keeping Jones on the bench the entire campaign.
