Giants GM compares Odell Beckham trade to Mets’ worst day ever

March 19, 2019

Is this supposed to make Giants fans feel any better?

Spending his Monday trying to explain the Odell Beckham trade and other puzzling offseason moves, Giants GM Dave Gettleman offered this question to Mike Francesa on WFAN:

“In New York sports history, when was the last time a guy of this magnitude was traded in his prime?”

Both agreed on the answer: Tom Seaver.

Of course the day the Mets traded The Franchise to the Reds, June 15, 1977, is known as one of the darkest days in Flushing.

While Beckham hasn’t accomplished nearly as much as Seaver did during the pitcher’s initial decade with the Mets — which of course included the team’s first World Series title in 1969 and a ton of masterful outings — it’s unlikely this comparison will calm Giants fans’ agita.
