Even vegan Cory Booker is heading to the Iowa Steak Fry to meet voters


The Democratic presidential candidates are descending on the Iowa Steak Fry this weekend — even the vegan guy.

Sen. Cory Booker, who is the first major presidential candidate to shun animal products, will be gobbling down non-meat options at the Des Moines event sponsored by the Democratic organization in Polk County, which includes the biggest city in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

A record breaking crowd of more than 10,000 Democrats is expected at the fundraising event, which will be attended by most of the candidates in the crowded field.

Most of the White House wannabes have devised attention-grabbing gimmicks to stand out from the crowd.

Sen. Kamala Harris will march into the venue with the Isiserettes, a Des Moines-based drum line crew that accompanied future president Barack Obama into the 2007 Steak Fry.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg will. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock will pour beers.

Organizers did not disclose what Booker will get to eat instead of the 10,500 beef steaks ordered for the even from Hy-Vee, Iowa’s biggest supermarket.

Booker drew laughs when he poked fun at rivals and himself at the latest Democratic debate. when asked if he would suggest more Americans adopt his vegan lifestyle.

“No. Let me translate that into Spanish: No," Booker said.
