An elderly couple died early Saturday when a fire tore through their posh East Side apartment, officials said.
The blaze erupted in the couple’s ninth floor apartment on E. 52nd St. off the East River — known as the River House — about 5:15 a.m.
More than 75 FDNY firefighters and medics rushed to the scene, but they couldn’t save an 85-year-old woman who died of severe burns, officials said.
Her 89-year-old husband died a short time later after he was rushed to New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center, officials said. The victims’ names were not immediately disclosed as cops reached out to family members.
The fire was put out about 6:45 a.m.
Five firefighters were injured fighting the blaze. Three were taken to New York Weill-Cornell with non-life threatening injuries. Two firefighters refused medical attention, officials said.
