Donovan for Congress: Republican primary voters should keep him fighting for Staten Island and Brooklyn

Staten Island and Brooklyn Republicans should go to the polls Tuesday and vote with pride for Rep. Dan Donovan over Michael Grimm, a felon, bully and extremist who has forfeited his chance to serve.

Donovan, former district attorney of Richmond County, is tough on crime and spending, and he has taken hard votes against GOP tax cuts harmful to New York and his constituents. That’s what good sense looks like.

More importantly, he is stable and morally upright, the opposite of Grimm.

President Trump, to his credit, has endorsed Donovan via tweet — saying, correctly, that the nomination of Grimm would risk the seat going Democratic in November. That’s less our concern, though there’s nothing wrong with the nation’s largest city having a foothold in the GOP House majority, which is what Donovan provides.

Rather than limiting his advocacy to Twitter, Trump should have visited and campaigned with Donovan in his old backyard.

This race shouldn’t be close. Donovan’s the man.
