Dominican police: The price on ‘Big Papi’s’ head was set at just $7,800 as six suspects are now detained in the weekend shooting

2019-06-13

Dominican National Police have identified Rolfy Ferreyra Cruz as the shooter of David Ortiz.

The accused Dominican Republic mastermind of a bungled hit on future Hall of Famer David Ortiz received just $7,800 to arrange the Sunday night ambush involving at least seven plotters, authorities said Wednesday.

As Boston’s beloved “Big Papi” continued his recovery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dominican law enforcement announced that six suspects were in custody for the attack where a lone shooter fired a single bullet point-blank into Ortiz from behind.

A seventh suspect, Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, aka “The Surgeon,” remained on the lam three days after the shooting. Police are also searching for a woman known as The Venezuelan, or Red, and two other men, prosecutors said.

The accused gunman was identified as baby-faced Rolfy “Sandy” Ferreyra, owner of a sparse goatee and a large tattoo of a burning skull on the left side of his chest. But investigators again declined to provide any motive for the unprovoked attack as the 43-year-old Ortiz sat with a friend at a club in Santo Domingo.

“We can’t give out too much, including the potential motive,” said Police Major Gen. Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte. “And we don’t want to push forward (any) hypothesis or other theories that he attack was or wasn’t meant for someone else.”

According to cops, the coordinator of the failed murder plot was also in custody as the investigation continues. Ortiz, who underwent one surgery in the Dominican and a second in Boston after the shooting, was expected to stay hospitalized for the near future.

Doctors said the bullet, fired without a word by the would-be assassin, damaged Ortiz’s liver, gallbladder and intestines. Dominican officials said they recovered the weapon used in the attack.

“His condition is guarded, and he will remain in ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress toward recovery,” said Ortiz’s wife Tiffany in a statement released Wednesday.

Prosecutors described a scenario where motorcyclist Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, 25, drove Ferreyra to the Dial Bar & Lounge on Sunday evening, with the suspects caught on videotape putting the final touches on their plan on a street running parallel to the one where Ortiz was shot.

Two Hyundais were used by the other participants in the plot, authorities said, with suspect Oliver Moises Mirabal Acosta seen behind the wheel of one.

Garcia was arrested when his motorcycle skidded out as he fled from the scene of the shooting, giving outraged fans of Ortiz a chance to batter the suspect bloody before police arrived.

But Garcia’s lawyer insisted his client was duped into driving the shooter to the club.

“He didn’t know what they were going to do,” said attorney Deivi Solano. “He’s a fan of David.”

While the Dominican is regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous nations, 10-time All-Star Ortiz typically travels through his homeland with little or no security.
