Delaware daycare worker charged with murder for smothering crying baby to death
A 19-year-old daycare worker has been arrested after she allegedly smothered an infant to death, according to police.
Dejoynay M. Ferguson was charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 4-month-old infant at the Little People Child Development Center in Bear, Delaware, after surveillance video showed her put her hand over the baby’s mouth and nose until she was unresponsive, according to the Delaware State Police.
Ferguson then allegedly put the baby back in the crib and, 20 minutes later, told the daycare owner that the child was unresponsive, at which point 911 was called.
The employee told police that the baby was “fussy” and wouldn’t stop crying, according to the Delaware News Journal.
Ferguson is being held on a $1 million cash bail at the Dolores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution.
The daycare facility’s license has been suspended indefinitely.
