Cops arrest shoplifter who fatally stabbed Yonkers store clerk

Police have arrested the shoplifter who knifed a Yonkers store clerk to death while trying to swipe a baseball cap from the shop, authorities said Friday.

Tyrese Shubrick, 21, was nabbed Wednesday and charged with manslaughter for slaying Ruben Martinez-Campos inside Premier Fashion on New Main St. and Brook St.

Police said Shubrick, a resident of Yonkers, got into a brawl with a cab driver on New Main St. before storming into the clothing store around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday.

He tried to take a baseball cap without paying but Martinez-Campos, 47, stopped him from leaving. As the two men fought, Shubrick pulled a knife and stabbed the employee in the chest, cops said.

Responding officers quickly cordoned off the block but Shubrick had already fled the area. EMS rushed Martinez-Campos to a local hospital where he died.

By Tuesday night, investigators had identified Shubrick as their suspect and had tracked him down to the village of Elmsford, which is about 10 miles north of Yonkers.

Shubrick’s arraignment in Yonkers Criminal Court was pending Friday.
