Chargers defensive tackle Brandon Mebane announced Wednesday that his daughter died late last week after just seven weeks.
Makenna was born premature with trisomy 13, a chromosomal condition often linked to severe intellectual disability, heart defects, brain and spinal cord abnormalities and cleft palates, according to the National Institute of Health.
“She wasn’t getting better so we had to make a decision,” Mebane said in a statement through the team. “She kept having bleeds from the stomach, and then when they tried to feed her, it wasn’t good for her liver.”
Mebane, a defensive co-captain, skipped Sunday’s wild card win over the Baltimore Ravens, but said he still plans to play in Sunday’s match-up against the New England Patriots.
He had previously missed four games during the regular season after Makenna was born.
