A California man died after getting shot eight times while checking on an elderly neighbor’s home following a burglary in the area.
Patrick Smith succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Thanksgiving Day after heroically fighting for his life for eight days, his wife said. The teen gunman who cops say killed him remains at large.
“I can’t imagine my life without this man,” wife Elizabeth wrote on a GoFundMe page after the shooting. “He’s everything to our son and I.”
Elizabeth Smith said a burglary suspect ran through the backyard of their Barstow home on Nov. 14. The couple waited out front until they believed everything was clear, and an elderly neighbor asked if Patrick could check her home because she was scared to go back in.
“Patrick being a gentleman went and checked her home which was clear but once he entered the backyard the suspect shot Patrick 8 times,” she wrote.
She said that the wounds left Patrick “almost completely void of blood.” However, she said he was making a “miraculous recovery” and was surprising doctors every day with his progress when he took a turn for the worse on Thursday. He passed away later in the day.
Barstow cops arrested four suspects in connection with the burglary, but are looking for alleged shooter Leslie Hawkins, who is just 18.
The GoFundMe page has raised more than $37,000 for the Smith family.
