British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was roundly mocked Sunday after he compared himself to Marvel character the Incredible Hulk when discussing Brexit.
Johnson, who made the comparison to the UK’s Mail on Sunday newspaper, said the UK would escape the “manacles” of the European Union like the character who is known for his anger and destructive tendencies.
“The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets,” Johnson said.
“Hulk always escaped, no matter how tightly bound in he seemed to be — and that is the case for this country. We will come out on Oct. 31.”
“Banner might be bound in manacles, but when provoked he would explode out of them,” Johnson added, referring to Bruce Banner, the character who transforms into the Hulk.
Twitter users responded to the comments with a mix of analysis and photoshopped pictures of Johnson.
Would this be the Incredible Hulk that is inspired by Mr. Hyde and commonly portrayed as a raging savage, inadvertently and indiscriminately destroying everything in its path, whose own alter ego has spent decades trying to quell? https://t.co/gymADY5iQw
Even the Incredible Hulk didn’t want to be the Incredible Hulk. What a strange inspiration.

Memo to the PM:
The hulk is not real.

"and what did you do"

I tried taking footage of Boris Johnson and scoring it to the Lonely Man theme from The Incredible Hulk and it sort of worked. pic.twitter.com/wDADVkapSS

HULK STOP MEDICINE SUPPLIES.
HULK STOCKPILE BODY BAGS.
HULK SHUT DOWN PARLIAMENT AND BREAK LAW.” pic.twitter.com/ewcwwAWR35
The only similarity between Boris Johnson and the Incredible Hulk is that they both often wake up wondering where their trousers are.
Actor Mark Ruffalo, who played the Hulk in numerous Marvel films, joined the fun as well.
Boris Johnson forgets that the Hulk only fights for the good of the whole. Mad and strong can also be dense and destructive. The Hulk works best when he is in unison with a team, and is a disaster when he is alone. Plus...he’s always got Dr. Banner with science and reason. pic.twitter.com/jN8BDzgpWl

Johnson is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker next week.
