A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed by police while running away from officers, according to authorities.

An officer in East Pittsburgh, Pa., opened fire on the teen as he tried to get away from a traffic stop on Tuesday night where the driver was arrested.

Police pulled over the car because it matched the description of one that had fled the scene of an earlier shooting where a 22-year-old man was wounded, the Allegheny County Police Department said in a statement.

Another passenger in the car also ran and got away from the scene.

“Multiple police agencies are assisting, including state police, which is providing a helicopter to assist in the search,” Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs told the Tribune-Review.

It was not clear whether that passenger was hit in the gunfire, though police have asked to speak to him.

Video purportedly from the scene shared on Facebook showed two people running from a car as three gun shots ring out.

“Why are they shooting?” a voice asks, “all they did was run.”
