Bill would add $20 fee to remove porn filter from new devices

People in Virginia wishing to access adult content on their freshly purchased iPhones may soon need to pay $20 to remove a porn filter.

House Bill 1592, aka the Human Trafficking Prevention Act, would require retailers in Old Dominion to make sure that “any product that makes content accessible on the internet” features a “digital content blocking capability that renders obscene content, including obscene items, obscene performances or obscene exhibitions, inaccessible.”

That means a purchase of a new smartphone or computer would be subject to the charge, WRIC reports.

To remove said filter, all one would have to do is pay a “digital access fee of $20,” write down that you acknowledge the “potential danger” of disabling the filter and provide photo ID proving you’re 18 or older.

In turn, a fund would be established so that all the proceeds would go to support victims of human trafficking as well as prosecute human trafficking cases.

Republican Delegate David A. LaRock, who introduced the bill, failed to respond to a Daily News request for comment.

It’s unclear how far the legislation will proceed in the House of Delegates, where control was finally decided earlier this month when, after a recount and examination in court, the name of the Republican incumbent in the much-contested race was picked out of a canister.

The state Senate is also controlled by the GOP.

Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, has yet to respond to the Daily News as to whether he would support the legislation.
