This sweet treat packs a political punch.
Ben & Jerry's is launching a new ice cream flavor, Pecan Resist, to fight the “Trump administration’s regressive and discriminatory policies.”
“We honor and stand with women, immigrants, people of color, and the millions of activists and allies who are courageously resisting the President's attack on our values, humanity, and environment,” reads a message on the socially conscious company’s web site.
“We celebrate the diversity of our glorious nation and raise our spoons in solidarity for all Americans,” the brand added.
The new limited batch flavor is a chocolate ice cream crammed with white and dark fudge chunks, pecans, walnuts and fudge-covered almonds. This concoction is normally sold under the name New York Super Fudge Chunk.
Sales of Pecan Resist will help fund groups that focus on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and refugee and immigrant rights.
“It supports four organizations that are working toward a more just and equitable future and peacefully resisting the Trump administration’s regressive and discriminatory policies,” the company stated. “These groups are working hard to defend and progress a more inclusive society.”
Ben & Jerry's will donate $25,000 to the following organizations: Honor the Earth, which aims to break the geographic and political isolation of Native communities; Women's March, whose goal is to harness the political power of diverse women; Color Of Change, a racial justice organization; and Neta, an independent media platform led by people of color along the Texas-Mexico border.
The frozen treats brand is no stranger to activism. Past campaigns have included changing the Chubby Hubby ice cream name to Hubby Hubby in 2009 to support same sex marriage in Vermont. And EmpowerMint was introduced in 2016 to promote voting rights.
