Baker Mayfield ‘clears the air’ with Giants QB Daniel Jones in text message

There’s no bad blood between Baker Mayfield and Daniel Jones.

Cleveland’s second-year QB said he reached out to Jones to “clear the air” after comments Mayfield made about the Giants rookie QB in a GQ article were released Tuesday.

“I reached out to Daniel because all that stuff was blown way out of hand, and I wanted him to know how I felt, and I’ve heard nothing but great things from Saquon (Barkley) and Sterling Shepard, guys that have a lot of respect for him and respect their opinions,” Mayfield said Wednesday of his text message exchange with Jones after his comments in the GQ article circulated.

“No worries, man,” Jones replied, according to Mayfield.

Brown’s harsh words about Big Blue’s top draft pick came from an interview the outlet conducted four months ago, according to Mayfield.

“I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones. Blows my mind,” Mayfield told GQ. “Some people overthink (quarterback evaluation)… They forget you’ve gotta win... Either you have a history of winning and being that guy for your team, or you don’t.”

The comments, which spread like wildfire, left both Mayfield and Jones having to respond — Mayfield for his words and Jones for a controversy not of his making.

But when the article was released, Mayfield said he was “pretty confused about (the story),” because he couldn’t remember what he had said four months ago.

The 22-year-old Jones, when asked about his thoughts on Mayfield’s comments during Giants camp on Tuesday, responded by calling the Browns "a great player.” He added that the best possible response to trash talk would be to “make sure we won the game.”

“In today’s day and age, you can read one thing and you can have your feelings,” Mayfield said. “That’s the reason I addressed it (Tuesday). To me, that came back on my character. That’s one thing that, I don’t care about a lot of opinions, if you like me or not, but that looked like my character was way out of line, and so, that’s the only reason I addressed it.”

The season for both the Browns and Giants — as well as their respective successes — has been linked since Big Blue traded their star wide receiver to Cleveland back in March.

Though Beckham has already suited up in Cleveland’s orange-brown-and-white — and has said more than a few choice words about his thoughts, feelings and emotions about the trade since March — his latest comments, in a Sports Illustrated article also released on Tuesday, read:

"This wasn’t no business move. This was personal. They thought they’d send me here (to Cleveland) to die.”

Mayfield was hardly the first person to question the Giants decision to pick the Duke QB at No. 6 overall — though he did clarify in his Instagram stories on Tuesday he was surprised when he was selected No. 1 overall in ’18 draft.

In fact, Giants GM Dave Gettleman responded to the criticism of his selection of Jones by insisting there was competition for Jones early on, but wouldn’t reveal the other teams in contention.

For now, we get it: Mayfield is sorry, Jones — who will start the season behind Eli Manning — isn’t bothered, the Browns have nothing to lose, and the Giants have everything to prove.
