More than 12 women and 1 man have alleged they were sexually assaulted by a California surgeon and his girlfriend since they were arrested earlier this month for allegedly drugging and raping two women.
Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas told reporters Friday that officials are widening their investigation into 38-year-old Grant Robicheaux and 31-year-old Cerissa Riley and are looking into alleged assaults that date back decades. Investigators are expanding “inquiries to several states as well as other parts of California,” he said.
Prosecutors have received more than 50 calls about the case since charges against the pair were announced Wednesday — one of them from an alleged victim in Louisiana, who alerted authorities to a possible incident that occurred 20 years ago, an official at the district attorney’s office told the the Los Angeles Times.
Robicheaux, a one-time subject of the Bravo reality show “Online Dating Rituals of the American Male,” and Riley were arrested on Sept. 12 and released on $100,000 bond each. Rackauckas said there is a possibility more charges could be filed, but could not predict whether or not the pair would be re-arrested.
They’re currently facing charges of rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance and sexual assault in connection two alleged incidents in 2016.Two women told authorities they were drugged and then sexually assaulted by the couple at Robicheaux’s apartment on separate occasions.
One of the accusers described the pair as “a Bonnie and Clyde” team who drugged her and forced her to engage in sex acts, according to court documents obtained by the Times. She went to police the following day and a toxicology report revealed she had cocaine, ecstasy and MDA — a stimulant called the “love drug” — in her system.
No arrests were immediately made, but the allegations sparked a two-year long probe into Robicheaux and Riley. In January, investigators uncovered video of a least one of the accusers being sexually assaulted at the Orthopedic surgeon’s home. They also found scores of images and video they believe to feature additional victims.
Rackauckas said Fridays it’s possible Robicheaux also targeted women through dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, according to CNN.
“Ladies please be careful when you meet people on these apps,” he said. “You don’t know what is behind what appears to be a perfect smile.”
The district attorney also encouraged anyone who believes they are victim to come forward and share information with his office.
“No one gets a pass to have their way with you once you are unconscious or past the point of consent,” Rackauckas said.
Robicheaux’s attorney, Philip Cohen, said he and his team have reviewed the video footage and are prepared to defend the pair in court, according to KTLA. He pointed out Robicheaux and Riley had both been aware of the allegations and did not attempt to flee. The doctor has twice left the country amid the investigation and has returned both times, he noted.
Earlier this week, attorneys issued a statement that “unequivocally denied” any “allegations of non-consensual sex” raised against the couple.
