Asian man requires nine stitches after being punched by hateful panhandler near Union Square

An Asian man was repeatedly punched in the face near Union Square by a panhandler who called him a “stupid Chino” in the latest hateful attack to plague the city, police said.

The 59-year-old victim was waiting for a city bus on E. 14th St. near the park just before 8 a.m. Tuesday when Saul Babilonia, 58, approached and asked for some money, cops said.

When the victim walked off, Babilonia followed him, screamed the slur “stupid Chino” — which means Chinese in Spanish — and punched the victim multiple times, said police.

EMS took the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he needed nine stitches to close a deep cut on his forehead, cops said.

Police arrested Babilonia nearby a short time later, charging him with assault as a hate crime, harassment as a hate crime and aggravated harassment.

His arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court was pending Wednesday.

The attack comes amid a spike of anti-Asian assaults across New York City.
