An accused bank robber in Maine was stopped not by police but by Mother Nature.

Jason Mackenrodt, 38, was arrested Tuesday after he held up the Bangor Savings Bank at gunpoint, according to Waterville police.

But he didn’t get away.

Instead, Mackenrodt, fleeing the bank, slipped on a patch of ice in the parking lot of a restaurant. The cash and his gun went flying out of his jacket pocket as he fell, police said.

A gust of wind then swept the cash into the air as a flurry of onlookers stole back the stolen money; officials said they returned the money to officers on the scene.

Maine State Police Special Agent Glen Lang, watching from his car, realized that Mackenrodt was likely the bank robber, tackled him and took him into custody, according to police.

Mackenrodt was charged with robbery and terrorizing and placed on a probation hold for burglary.
