He’s had better days.

Shenectady resident Richard J. Betters Jr., 44, is being held on $20,000 bail after trying to sell 20 Oxycodone pills to a detective he texted by accident.

According to Lieutenant William Male of the Rotterdam Police Department, Betters inadvertently reached out to a detective whose number he had from “prior dealings” with law enforcement Tuesday. The detective arranged to meet Betters at a Taco Bell eatery, where the alleged perp showed up looking to make a deal.

That’s when he was arrested.

“The detective met with him and played along,” Male said. “We’re familiar with him here in town.”

Betters, who has a preliminary hearing set for Thursday afternoon, is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and intent to sell. He had numerous cuts and abrasions on his face when he met with police, officers said.

”I can only say the injuries were present when we encountered Mr. Betters,” according to Male. “We are unsure of how they were sustained.”
