Two teenage Texas boys found dead inside a submerged vehicle were brothers.

Police located the white Volkswagen in a Dallas-area creek Wednesday morning and confirmed the victims were siblings Diego and Daniel Rivera.

An unidentified family member told TV station KXAS that Diego, a high school senior, was missing his watch and was trying to find it on Tuesday. That’s when younger brother Daniel, an eighth-grader, said he would tag along.

It would be the last time they were seen alive.

Early Wednesday morning, state troopers discovered the white Volkswagen submerged in Hickory Creek in Denton.

Lt. Lonny Haschel said it appeared the vehicle went over an embankment, overturned and plunged into the creek about 25 feet below.

The area where the car plummeted into the creek has neither a guardrail nor lights. Texas Highway Patrol investigators are attempting to re-create the events preceding the crash.

“(Investigators) are going to look at the vehicle evidence, the physical evidence, at the scene, the roadway, the surface, the condition of the driver — all of those things will come into play,” said Haschel.

Diego’s soccer coach Cody Schroeder recalled the boy as being a strong team player.

“Always a smile on his face, always with good effort, never complained,” said Schroeder.

The medical examiner will perform autopsies to determine the siblings’ cause of death.
