Woman, 66, wounded by stray bullet in Brooklyn

2020-07-22

A stray bullet struck and wounded a woman as she walked from one homeless shelter to another on a Brooklyn street corner Monday morning, police said.

Yvette Vuono, 66, was hit in the buttocks at Nostrand and Atlantic Aves. in Bedford-Stuyvesant about 7 a.m.

Police sources said she was walking to a Best Western hotel, which houses homeless people, when two men started arguing across the street. One of them pulled out a gun, hitting her, police sources said.

Medics rushed her to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.

An employee of nearby Furman’s Coffee on Nostrand Ave. recognized Vuono as a recent regular customer.

“She had just started coming in here. She would come here early in the morning to sit down in the back because we have a seating area,” said Patricia Lopez, referring to the coffee shop’s plant-filled backyard. “She would sit there and write in a notebook. She was sweet.”

Vuono last came in Sunday said another worker, 37-year-old Emily Suardi.

“She was asking for our hours,” Suardi said. “Oh, no.”

There were no immediate arrests.

The shooting follows yet another violent weekend in the city, with 24 people shot Friday through Sunday, compared to five for the same three days last year.
