Three of four inmates who escaped from Ohio jail captured in North Carolina after one day on loose

2019-09-30

Three of four inmates who escaped from a county jail in Ohio early Sunday have been apprehended in North Carolina.

Christopher Clemente, Brynn Martin and Troy McDaniel Jr. were “captured without incident” at about 2 a.m. in Cary, N.C., on Monday and await extradition to Ohio. However, Lawrence Lee III remains on the loose after fleeing from law enforcement officers at the time of the arrests.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol had alerted authorities that the four men were in the area, according to The Associated Press.

“Investigators have worked continuously throughout the day and night since the incident occurred to follow up on tips and develop information which has led to the captures,” said Gallia County (Ohio) Sheriff Matt Champlin. "I would like to say a special thanks to all of the agencies who have been instrumental in assisting us in this investigation.”

The four inmates had been able to overpower two corrections officers when they escaped from the Gallia County Jail at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Clemente, Martin, McDaniel and Lee had used a homemade weapon against the officers and they forced open a secured door when they made their escape on Sunday. Investigators say they also had help from someone on the outside.

Lee, the inmate who remains on the loose, was being held on charges of identity fraud, obstructing official business and assault.

Clemente is facing drug trafficking charges and Martin is being held for breaking and entering, receiving stolen property and two counts of failure to appear. McDaniel is accused of failing to appear in juvenile court for non-support of dependents.

Lee is “not believed to be a danger,” according to the Cary Police Department, but anyone who spots him should not make contact with him.
