Terry Crews calls for Pornhub — a privately funded porn site — to be defunded

2020-07-19

TV cop Terry Crews wants to defund pornography — whatever that means.

The hulking “Brooklyn Nine-NIne” star confused his Twitter followers with a tweet calling to “DEFUND PORNHUB.”

The reference seems to apply to a movement to defund police departments nationwide and reallocate tax payer money to other places. That push began in late May when an unarmed Black man died on a Minnesota street as a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. But as several online commenters pointed out to Crews, Pornhub is a private company that funds itself with ads and subscriptions. Police departments are supported by tax payer dollars.

“But... Porhub isn’t publicly funded?” wrote one Twitter follower. “I’m confused.”

Others supported the former football players vaguely defined initiative. One commenter asked if the tweet was some sort of parody.

Crews’ tweet was used to promote the non-profit group Fight the New Drug, which states its goal is to draw awareness to the dark side of pornography. Crews claimed in 2016 that he’d kicked a pornography addiction that led him to a rehabilitation program.

His tweet had been liked by 69,000 people by Thursday evening.
