Team USA star Megan Rapinoe said her squad has made America proud again
Make America Proud Again?
Team USA standout Megan Rapinoe believes her squad’s triumphant World Cup run gave new hope to Americans who weren’t feeling good about the state of the nation. The purple-haired MVP told NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday she wants her success on the field to carry into the non-sporting world.
“I think the opportunity is in everyone’s exhaustion of the fighting and the negative, and our team has managed to make people proud again, to capture people’s interest, to make them want to do something,” the 34-year-old team co-captain said. “I think people are asking the question, ‘How can we rally around this team?’ And in that, really, what the team stands for, whether it’s equal pay or racial equality or LGBTQ rights.”
Rapinoe’s on-field heroics during Team USA’s run to a second consecutive World Cup title saw her score six goals, including the game winner against the Netherlands in the championship match. An extra degree of difficulty was added to that challenge when President Trump — reacting to a weeks-old interview during the tournament — tweeted his offense over Rapinoe stating that if her team won, she would not go to the White House to celebrate.
Rapinoe’s teammate Ali Krieger got into the debate on Twitter, where she more directly lashed out at Trump. "I know women who you cannot control or grope anger you, but I stand by (Rapinoe) & will sit this one out as well,” she wrote.
Days before the row between Trump and Rapinoe, journalist E. Jean Carroll penned an article for New York magazine claiming Trump raped her in the 1990s. Trump has denied that claim as well as well as nearly two dozen other accusations of sexual misconduct that have been leveled against him.
“I think we’ve just managed to give people hope,” Rapinoe told “Meet the Press.” "Now we need to do the next step, which is to actually take the progress step.”
Also on Sunday, Rapinoe was confirmed to speak at Ozy Fest on Central Park’s Great Lawn on July 21. She will be joined at the weekend arts and music festival by celebs including Spike Lee, Padma Lakshmi, Trevor Noah, Mark Cuban and John Legend.
