This alligator made quite a splash — by flipping over a kayak with a man aboard.
The shocking scene was captured on camera by the kayaker, Pete Joyce, who told NBC News that he only noticed the animal lurking in the waters of Waccamaw River in North Carolina when the gator was just three feet away from him.
“I was just about to turn around when it came towards me,” Joyce told the news outlet. “The video doesn’t show how hard the impact was. The alligator hit the kayak so hard, I lost my balance and started to roll.”
Footage of the incident on July 12 appears to show the reptile bump into Joyce’s boat as he paddles, flipping the kayak over.
As he got back into the boat, Joyce, 46, said he could see the alligator still swimming below, so he hit the animal three times in an effort to scare it away.
“This time of year is a bad one to be paddling because we’re on the heels of mating season and animals are guarding their nests,” the veteran kayaker said.
“Kayaking’s a great hobby, but you need to know your environment. You’re going into wildlife so you have to do your research.”
