Pennsylvania officer pleads guilty to child porn charges after nearly 4,000 graphic images, videos found on his computer

A former sheriff’s deputy in Pennsylvania pleaded guilty to child pornography charges after authorities uncovered nearly 4,000 illicit images and videos on his computer.

Matthew Laver, who served as a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy until 2015, entered a guilty plea Monday on multiple counts of distribution, receipt and possession of child porn, NBC Philadelphia reported. He was arrested in March after investigators tracked him swapping and collecting graphic photos and clips over a 10-year time frame.

While Laver, of Souderton, was arrested three years after departing the sheriff’s office, investigators did find pornographic material on his devices dating back to his employment as both a Montgomery officer and during his prior job as a carpenter with the U.S. Army Reserve.

“The harm caused by child exploitation is devastating and long-lasting, which is why we prosecute these cases aggressively,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Eileen Castilla said.

“In this case, the conduct was particularly egregious because the defendant was a member of a law enforcement organization charged with enforcing the law. We stand ready with our federal and local partners to identify and prosecute all who would prey on minor children.”

Laver eventually confessed to the crime when confronted by officers, telling them he often worried he would get caught, according to court documents.

He’s facing at least a five-year mandatory prison term and his sentencing hearing is scheduled for January.
