Parents under scrutiny for near-fatal drowning of infant for leaving her alone in tub in their NYC apartment
The parents of an infant Harlem girl who is clinging to life after nearly drowning are under scrutiny for leaving her alone in a rapidly filling bathtub, police sources said Tuesday.
The 8-month-old girl’s mom told police she placed her in a floating seat in the bathtub and turned on the water at their apartment in the Polo Grounds Towers on Frederick Douglass Blvd near 155th St. about 4:45 p.m. Monday.
She said she left the bathroom for a few minutes and when she returned the water was higher than she thought it would be and the floating seat had overturned. The baby was face down in the water, sources said.
She called 911 to report her baby had drowned.
When cops and medics arrived, the baby’s father was doing CPR, sources said. Medics did CPR at the scene and rushed the girl to Harlem Hospital, where she remains in critical condition, officials said.
Cops are now investigating the case as possible child abuse for leaving the baby alone in the tub, a police source said.
