Ocasio-Cortez tests clout with congressional endorsement of insurgent Democrat in Chicago

AOC is looking to test her appeal in the 312 area code.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens) has endorsed liberal insurgent Marie Newman in her primary fight against moderate Chicago Democratic Rep. Daniel Lipinski.

The firebrand lefty hopes her imprimatur can help topple Lipinski, an eight-term incumbent who barely beat back Newman’s challenge in 2018.

Lipinski’s district is strongly Democratic and spans working-class neighborhoods in southwest Chicago and nearby suburbs.

Ocasio-Cortez upended Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens) last year in the biggest shocker of the primary season.

A Democratic socialist, she hopes to use her proven appeal with the progressive wing of the Democratic party and with small donors to make an impact nationwide.

Last week Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, who faces a potential primary challenge from Rep. Joe Kennedy III. Markey is a co-sponsor of Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” proposal.

Justice Democrats, a group aligned with Ocasio-Cortez, has backed Newman and several other challengers to incumbent lawmakers in the House.
