NYC mom criminally charged in drowning death of baby daughter

2019-09-10

A Bronx mother was charged Tuesday with criminally negligent homicide in the bathtub drowning death of her 8-month-old daughter, police said.

Little Amelie Belle Perez died at Montefiore Children's Hospital on July 15, 12 days after she was rushed there from her family's Murphy Houses apartment on Vyse Ave. near E. 173rd St.

Her mother, Emily Ramirez, 23, at the time told police she left the infant unattended in the tub for "a couple of minutes" with the water running. When she returned the baby was facedown in the water.

Frantic, Ramirez pulled Amelie from the tub and took her to the living room, where she called 911 and tried to revive her.

Authorities announced on July 23 that her death was ruled a homicide. The Bronx District Attorney’s Office authorized the arrest on Thursday but police could not immediately locate Ramirez, sources said.

She was escorted by her lawyer when she surrendered at the Bronx District Attorney’s office Thursday. Ramirez said nothing to authorities.

After the death was ruled a homicide, Ramirez said little to a reporter who knocked on her door.

“You’re really going to come here and ask me about my daughter?” she told the Daily News. “So you can put it in the news?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she added before closing the door to her apartment.
