A city Department of Correction officer was suspended and may face criminal charges for smuggling contraband into Rikers Island, officials and sources said Wednesday.
Chantal De Los Santos, a guard at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Rikers Island, was suspended earlier this week after she was accused of smuggling some cellphones and tattoo equipment into the jail, authorities said.
The smuggling was discovered during a city Department of Investigation probe into Rikers Island.
“This officer was immediately suspended and is currently under investigation,” DOC spokesman Jason Kersten said.
As of Wednesday, no criminal charges have been filed against Santos, who joined the DOC in January 2018.
DOI declined to comment when contacted by the Daily News.
Sources with knowledge of the case said Santos — who made $54,591 with the DOC last year according to public records — was taken in for questioning during a roll call at Rikers Island.
The items may have been for an inmate she has a personal relationship with, according to one source with knowledge of the case.
