North Carolina mom charged after baby found in trash can with umbilical cord wrapped around its neck

A Wilmington, North Carolina, mother has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a crying newborn baby was found in a trash can last week.

Maryuri Estefany Calix-Macedo, 21, was taken into custody on Saturday and is currently being held at the county jail, according to The News & Observer.

Her alleged son was found by a woman walking her dog on Thursday who heard the baby’s cries from the can. The boy was found inside a tied black trash bag with his umbilical cord still attached and wrapped around its neck. However, despite these circumstances, the baby was alive and soon arrived at a hospital, where he is reportedly “healthy and doing well.”
