Naomi Osaka eliminates Coco Gauff from U.S. Open, then comforts and media-trains her

Naomi Osaka thoroughly dominated her third-round match against 15-year-old Coco Gauff, cruising 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour. Gauff was understandably distraught after the match, but Osaka told her to stay on the court with her for an interview. “It would be better than going into the showers and crying...Let these people know how you feel,” Osaka could be heard saying.

Then when Gauff and Osaka went for a television interview, Gauff said that she knew she’d cry her way through it, and Osaka told her to do it anyway.

It was a genuine and lovely moment between the teen phenom and defending Open champion, and Gauff was smart to take interview advice from Osaka, who will have the media eating out of her hand for life now.
