A man brought in for questioning for the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy at a Brooklyn park was instead charged with another slaying — the shooting death of a man outside a nearby strip club four months ago, police said Friday.
Dashawn Austin, 25, was charged with murder and gun possession for killing Janile Whitted, 26, outside Amour Cabaret, a self-described bikini bar on Nostrand Ave. near Herkimer St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant on March 3.
Whitted, of Queens, was repeatedly shot in the chest outside the bar around 3:15 a.m., cops said. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, but he could not be saved.
Since his death, clergy members and residents have called for the strip club to be shut down.
It wasn’t immediately clear why Whitted was shot or how police linked Austin to the murder.
Austin was originally questioned in the horrific Sunday night death of little Davell Gardner Jr. who was shot dead in his stroller during a family cookout at Raymond Bush Playground, about ten blocks away from Amour.
Davell, who would have turned 2 in September, was one of four people killed after two men stepped out of a car and opened fire. The other victims, all adult men, survived and police believe they were targeted.
It was not clear if detectives have ruled Austin out as a suspect in the boy’s murder. No arrests have been made in the playground shooting, cops said.
