Man dies after being struck with metal pipe by Bronx homeowner who believed victim was trying to rob him

A man died after being hit in the head with a metal pipe by a Bronx homeowner who claims the victim was trying to break into his house, police said.

The 29-year-old victim was sprawled on the ground, unconscious, when police arrived to the E. 223rd St. home near Barnes Ave. in Olinville just before midnight Thursday.

The 54-year-old homeowner told officers at the scene that he was trying to prevent the victim from robbing him, cops said.

Medics rushed the victim to Montefiore Medical Center but he could not be saved. A city medical examiner will determine his exact cause of death.

The homeowner was taken into custody but it wasn’t immediately clear whether he would be charged.
