Defending champ Naomi Osaka knocked out in fourth round of U.S. Open

Naomi Osaka was bounced 7-5, 6-4 by Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. The top-seeded Osaka won’t have a chance to defend her title after winning her two previous matches in straight sets.

Osaka had never beaten Bencic, including two losses to her earlier this year. Osaka’s left knee appeared to be bothering her slightly, but Bencic was the better player from start to finish.

Osaka had set herself up to be a fan favorite, encouraging teenager Coco Gauff after crushing her in the third round. But she wouldn’t make it to the quarterfinals, where Bencic will face Donna Vekic.

Bencic, the No. 13 seed and current world No. 12, has made one Grand Slam quarterfinal before, at the 2014 U.S. Open.
