Bronx baby accidentally smothered by sleeping cousin, 5

A baby sleeping in the same bed as her 5-year-old cousin was accidentally smothered and killed in the Bronx early Monday when the older child rolled over on her, police sources said.

Six-month-old Ziebella Thorne-Young was unconscious when her aunt found her under the cousin at about 1:15 a.m. inside the family’s Butler Houses apartment on Webster Ave. in Claremont Village.

An EMS crew rushed the child to BronxCare Health System but she could not be saved.

The victim’s mother had asked the aunt to babysit her daughter and was not there at the time. Sources said the aunt made numerous checks after putting her niece and daughter to sleep in the same bed.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but police do not suspect foul play.
