9-year-old boy shot in both legs in another violent night in Atlanta

A 9-year-old boy was shot in Atlanta after an argument turned violent near several bars and restaurants Wednesday night — just days after another child was murdered in the city.

The boy and two adults were taken to the hospital after being shot around 9:30 p.m. in East Atlanta Village, authorities said.

The child was struck in both legs, a man was hit in the buttocks and the other man was shot in the hand, police told news outlets. All three are expected to survive.

The incident follows a series of shootings that led Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to declare a state of emergency and call 1,000 National Guard troops to Atlanta.

One of the five people who were shot and killed over the Fourth of July weekend was 8-year-old Secoriea Turner, whose still-unsolved murder has sparked outrage across the city. The girl was riding in a car with her mother Saturday night when at least two people sprayed the vehicle with bullets, killing the child near the Wendy’s restaurant where Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by police last month.

Authorities said Secoriea’s mother was trying to go into a parking lot that was partially blocked by illegally placed barricades when the shooters opened fire.

“You shot and killed a baby,” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in an emotional news conference Sunday.

Police are still investigating how many shooters were involved in Wednesday night’s shooting, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

No arrests have been made.
